Walk on the Wild Side

Maybe it’s the hidden rebel in me, but I’ve been gravitating toward leopard print rugs and carpets lately. Perhaps I need to thank (or admonish?) Mr. Miles Redd, the profligate decorator who holds little back when it comes to color and pattern. His use of exotic carpets (especially in bedrooms) may seem risky, but it works — every. single. time.

Of course, you have to be careful when using animal prints of any kind, whether in fabrics or floor coverings, because they can quickly become tacky. It’s important to pick a rug or carpet that’s well made and has rich tones (nothing shiny) and then to pair it with neutral and solid colors and elegant fabrics, finishes, and accessories. It’s truly amazing how crisp white bedding, sophisticated artwork, or painted wood end tables can make a jungle print feel down right tame.

If you’re a little intimidated by the idea of wall-to-wall leopard, consider adding the pattern in a smaller dose, such as in a hall or stair runner, as seen below, or a doormat, as one of my favorite bloggers, Jenny, did.

You can bring this fabulous feline look home with any of these rugs that, when appropriately tempered, promise to bring glamour to any room with the added bonus of durability (those spots will hide a multitude of sins) and wallet friendliness. So go on and walk on the wild side — just remember to follow the rules when you’re there.

  • I haven't used leopard print yet, but I love it and have always wanted to incorporate it into my decor!
