Last week a photographer friend and I ventured over to Monroe, North Carolina, to visit one of the state's newest — and most unique — wineries. Writer Victoria Bouloubasis brilliantly featured Treehouse Vineyards in our March/April edition of SavorNC. But when the charming Nordan family extended a personal invitation, I couldn't resist seeing it for myself.
"While living with and caring for his elderly mother-in-law, owner Phil Nordan built his wife, Dianne, a treehouse 30 feet above the ground as a 'date night' escape," Bouloubasis writes. This original treehouse is one of two now on the property.
The Nordans planted Treehouse Vineyards in Spring 2005, and opened their temporary tasting room last November. There, Dianne pours five muscadine wines, each named after a family story, special pet, or as a tribute to the Union County community where she was born and raised.

An outside patio at the foot of the original treehouse is the site of many events, including live music and games. Treehouse Vineyards offers Boar's Head meats and cheeses, but Dianne says she invites visitors to pack a picnic or order in from a local restaurant. "We want folks to stay the day ... walk the grounds ... let their kids touch the horses," she adds. "We're all about family around here."

At the back of the property is a newly built, furnished, two-level treehouse for rent. (Yes, that's right.) "It's a serene escape at a steal: $100 for the first night, with $50 each additional night, including a sampling of the inspired Date Night wine to share on the front porch," Bouloubasis writes. Quarters are tight, but the novelty experience is unbeatable. Find more details here: www.treehousevineyards.net/treehouserental.
