I’ve enjoyed watching the North Carolina wine industry grow up around me over the last 10 years. Not only do we have more than 100 wineries, but a lot of them are pretty darn good, too. We have large regional festivals, smaller mini festivals, and various special events throughout our little corner of wine country. If you want to get to know our wines, there are gatherings of like-minded folks happening year round.
The phrase “garage winery” gets thrown around a lot. It’s used to describe the smaller producers who focus on quality hand-crafted batches over large mass-produced mono wines. While the phrase is certainly appropriate for Cellar 4201 Vineyards, I think it’s more apropos to call them the “Garage Band” of wineries in the Yadkin Valley. For some, the term may conjure visions of sweaty guys in a garage playing sloppy rock n roll, for me it speaks to the passion, energy and utter lack of pretension that Greg and Donna Hutchins have for their vineyard and wines.
