Blog » Make a Smoothie Resolution

It’s the beginning of the new year and I’m willing to bet that many of you have made resolutions to eat healthier in 2012. Some people succeed in their resolutions to change their diet, but even more fail.
Why? Because many people come up with drastic goals that they can’t possibly keep in the long term.
Making huge changes in your lifestyle is hard. But do you know what is not so difficult? Making a small change that is good for you, delicious, and easy to incorporate in your everyday life.
I’m talking about smoothies. Delicious, creamy, packed full of nutrients, smoothies.
By making a resolution to eat several smoothies a week for breakfast, you can start the day with several servings of fruit, lean protein, and even a serving of vegetables. Yes, you can incorporate vegetables into smoothies without compromising taste.
Here are a few of my favorite smoothies to get your started.

Blackberry Smoothie (serves 1)
1 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice)
1/2 frozen banana
2/3 cup frozen blackberries
2 Tbsp. vanilla whey protein
Combine all ingredients and blend in a blender. Serve immediately.

Carrot Cake Smoothie (serves 1)
1 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice)
2 carrots, grated*
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 frozen banana
2 teaspoon honey
Combine all ingredients and blend in a blender. Serve immediately.
*If you have a high powered blender, grating the carrots isn’t necessary. Cut each carrot in 3-4 pieces and blend away.

Lemon Basil Smoothie (serves 1)
1 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice)
1/2 frozen banana
juice of 1 lemon
zest of 1 lemon
1/4 cup loosely packed basil
2 Tablespoons vanilla protein powder
Combine all ingredients and blend in a blender. Serve immediately.

Mint Green Chocolate Smoothie (serves 1)
1 cup milk (or milk of your choice)
1/2 frozen banana
1/4 cup loosely packed mint leaves
2 Tablespoon chocolate whey protein
1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup frozen spinach*
*Yes, spinach.
Maybe this is your first time seeing spinach added to a smoothie or your millionth time seeing it. I’ve been putting spinach in my smoothies for over two years and absolutely love it. I like frozen spinach best because it makes my smoothies even thicker and creamier. The best part is the nutrients and the second best part is that you can’t taste it a bit. Come on, try it. I promise that it will only enhance the texture of your smoothie and won’t affect the taste.
As you can see, most of my smoothies have very basic ingredients as their foundation: 1 cup milk + half a banana + 2 Tablespoons of whey protein. Sometimes I use 1/2 cup milk + 1 cup plain yogurt + 1 Tablespoon whey protein.
Play around with the ingredients and find what you like best. Be creative with fruits and even vegetables. Before you know it, your resolution will turn into a treat to which you’ll look forward.
