Blog » Kathy's Kitchen Makeover: Before

My husband married me because I can cook. (There were a few other reasons, but I won’t go into that!) I like to try new recipes and rarely make the same thing twice. So, you would think that a beautiful kitchen would have top priority in our house. In theory, this is true. However, in reality, there are many other priorities that took precedence in the 12 years that we have lived in our house: Husband’s new business. Braces. Summer camps. My new law firm. SavorNC magazine. Bad economy. Not to mention the wonderful experiment we were doing with delayed gratification.
But there comes a time when a girl just can’t take it anymore. I have salmon pink laminate countertops. Every time I open my drawers I have shavings in my pots. Not a few shavings, but enough to make me rewash the pot E-V-E-R-Y time I cooked anything. And then there are the cabinets themselves — I have to use a knife to shimmy open the drawer with the lids in it. Really.

We have decided that it is finally time to remodel. This remodeling project is not about updating with granite countertops and the latest appliances. This remodeling project is about creating a place in which I can function without having to constantly get creative about how to open the drawers. It is also about creating a place that I want to come home to — and not a place that makes me cringe every time I set foot in it.
I have never done a remodeling project that my husband couldn’t do. But this time we have hired a designer and a contractor. In the coming weeks, I will share our choices and trials and excitement. Please join me as I embark on this adventure.

We have had a lot of fun in that kitchen - despite its functionality! Very excited for you and I can't wait to see the end result.
