Exceptional Grains: Bulgar

Posted by Kelly Davis on 16 May 2012

I am a huge fan of Middle Eastern food and I jump at the chance to order falafel, pita, kabobs, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), and tabouli every chance I get. But I often overlook making these dishes at home. Tabouli is incredibly easy to make and is made up of very simple ingredients, one of which is the exceptional grain bulgar.

Fired Up! Creative Lounge

I had been hearing about this place, Fired Up! Creative Lounge (www.fireduplounge.com), for quite a while. Although I don’t consider myself to be talented in the art world, the thought of painting pottery sounded appealing. I’d tried to talk my mom into a session as a birthday gift last year, and its come up as a “Girl’s Night Out” option among my friends as well. So, this past Christmas, I was pleasantly surprised when my 6-year-old son received a gift certificate to Fired Up! Creative Lounge from my brother and his wife. I am always thrilled that they know that we prefer experiences as gifts for our son, rather than racking up more China-made plastic toys.  I was especially thrilled that I finally received just the prompt that I needed to get my butt into the studio to check it out!

The Inn on Church, Hendersonville's only downtown hotel, is a 21-room historic bed and breakfast. Built in the early 1920s, Inn on Church gained its certification as a National Historic Place in 1989. Each room has a private bath and comes with a gourmet breakfast, plus access to a coffee and tea bar. No matter which room you select, you'll enjoy an uniquely themed space with a cozy vintage atmosphere. Innkeepers Joe and Stephanie Carlton say there's something for everyone at the Inn on Church, as it's the "inn" place to be in downtown Hendersonville.

Couscous is one of those grains that I sometimes forget, and then wonder how I could have overlooked such a tasty dish. Light, fluffy, and easily adaptable to whatever ingredients you have on hand, couscous is for everyone, from the occasional cook to the gourmet chef. It’s even for those of you who think cooking consists of heating up a frozen meal. Yes, cooking couscous is that easy.

Kathy's Kitchen Makeover: Before

Posted by Kathy Worm on 20 April 2012 | 8 Comments

My husband married me because I can cook. (There were a few other reasons, but I won’t go into that!) I like to try new recipes and rarely make the same thing twice. So, you would think that a beautiful kitchen would have top priority in our house. In theory, this is true. However, in reality, there are many other priorities that took precedence in the 12 years that we have lived in our house: Husband’s new business. Braces. Summer camps. My new law firm. SavorNC magazine. Bad economy. Not to mention the wonderful experiment we were doing with delayed gratification.
